It's one big happy amalgamated server. There aren't shards in a traditional sense, the only distinction is what 'realm' you are identified with based on real world location. (America, Europe, Korea)

All the servers are 'invisible' so to speak. The only differences are what countries you're playing from. Each country has their own area, with an international district where you can meet up with people.

So, to sum it up, you can play with everybody else who is online. No joining the wrong server from a friend.
